A história do santo deste dia se entrelaça com a cidade italiana de Nápoles, onde o corpo e sangue de Januário estão guardados. Este santo viveu no fim do século III e se tornara Bispo de Benevento, cidade próxima a Nápoles.
Como cristão estava constantemente se preparando para testemunhar (se preciso com o derramamento do próprio sangue) seu amor ao Senhor, já que, naqueles tempos em que a Igreja estava sendo perseguida, não era difícil ser preso, condenado e martirizado pelos inimigos da Verdade.
Na função de Bispo foi zeloso, bondoso e sábio, até ser juntamente com seus diáconos, preso e condenado a virar comida dos leões no anfiteatro da cidade de Pozzuoli (a primeira terra italiana que pisou o apóstolo Paulo a caminho de Roma). Igual ao profeta Daniel e muitos outros, as feras lamberam, mas não avançaram nestes homens protegidos por Jesus. Nesse caso, sob a ordem do terrível imperador Diocleciano (último grande perseguidor), a única solução era a espada manejada pela irracional maldade humana. Foram decapitados. Isso ocorreu no ano 305.
Alguns cristãos, piedosamente, recolheram numa ampola o sangue do Bispo Januário para conservá-lo como preciosa relíquia e seu corpo acabou na Catedral de Nápoles. A partir disso, os napolitanos começaram a venerar o santo como protetor da peste e das erupções do vulcão Vesúvio.
Dentre tantos milagres alcançados pela sua intercessão, talvez o maior se deve ao seu sangue, “aquele guardado na ampola”. Acontece que o sangue é exposto na Catedral, no dia da festa de São Januário, e o extraordinário é que há séculos, o sangue, durante uma cerimônia, do estado sólido passa para o estado líquido, mudando de cor, de volume e até seu peso duplica. A multidão edificada se manifesta com gritos, enquanto a ciência, que já provou ser sangue humano, silencia quanto a uma explicação para este fato, esclarecido somente pela fé.
