O Papa Francisco, por meio de seu secretário de Estado, cardeal Pietro Parolin, enviou uma mensagem de apoio à campanha de combate ao trabalho infantil empreendida pelo Santuário Nacional de Aparecida (SP), em parceria com o Ministério Público do Trabalho (MPT), Justiça do Trabalho, Organização Internacional do Trabalho (OIT) e Fórum Nacional de Prevenção e Erradicação do Trabalho Infantil (FNPETI), por ocasião do Dia Mundial Contra o Trabalho Infantil (12 de junho).
Na comunicação dirigida ao reitor do Santuário Nacional, padre Eduardo Catalfo, o cardeal Pietro Parolin afirma que o Papa Francisco “se une de bom grado” às iniciativas de enfrentamento do trabalho ilegal de crianças e adolescentes, pois se trata de uma oportunidade “para unir esforços em vista de erradicar essa chaga tão terrível que priva a tantas crianças do seu direito de ter uma infância saudável”.
Indo ao encontro da campanha nacional de 2020, que alerta para o risco de crescimento da exploração do trabalho infantil diante dos impactos da pandemia, a mensagem aponta para o perigo que decorre da negligência: “fechar os olhos para a exploração infantil – de qualquer espécie – significa hipotecar a esperança”.
A carta ainda exorta os fiéis católicos, maioria no Brasil, a “trabalhar junto com instituições promovendo iniciativas concretas e eficazes para garantir e defender a dignidade daqueles que são mais frágeis”. A mensagem é concluída através de um pedido a Nossa Senhora da Aparecida, padroeira do Brasil, para que “inspire e acompanhe todos os que estão comprometidos com esta nobre causa da erradicação do trabalho infantil”. “O Papa Francisco de coração concede a todos a Benção Apostólica, pedindo também que, por favor, não deixem de rezar por ele”.
